NASEM Workshop on Extreme Rainfall in Mountainous Regions

  • 1.  NASEM Workshop on Extreme Rainfall in Mountainous Regions

    Posted 30 days ago

    Greetings,

Our colleagues at the National Academies of Science Engineering and Medicine (NASEM) asked that we share the following notice and registration information with those in the ASDSO community interested in Modernizing PMP.

    ------------------
REGISTER NOW! Join the National Academies November 4, 2025, for a virtual workshop on extreme rainfall in mountainous regions.

This virtual workshop will highlight current scientific understanding and critical knowledge gaps related to extreme warm-season rainfall in mountainous regions.

    Topics will include:
    • Observation and analysis of extreme precipitation in complex terrain
    • Modeling approaches for both active and retrospective rainfall events
    • Data and tools needed to support hydrologic and hydraulic modeling, including improved estimation of Probable Maximum Precipitation (PMP)
This event draws from the recent consensus study report Modernizing Probable Maximum Precipitation Estimation, which recommends a new definition of PMP and presents a vision for a methodology that will be relevant to the design, operation, and regulation of critical infrastructure such as dams and nuclear power plants.
Members of the EPIC committee hope to see many familiar names logged in during this full day workshop.
    Cheers,
